Our Teeth Investigation Continues

Bar chart – How many teeth have you lost?

What does this information tell us?

· It tells you how many people have lost that amount of teeth.

· No one has lost five teeth. And one person’s lost one tooth.

· Some people haven’t lost any teeth.

· Can we know how many it all is together?

The children didn’t seem as confident with the data being displayed horizontally; in the past they have been very confident in creating and interpreting vertical column graphs. We shall gather more data in this manner in future sessions and support children to become more familiar with different ways of presenting data.

In the past session we started to think about the accuracy of our maps and diagrams and this is something that we shall continue to explore in future sessions. We shall ask such questions as ‘What do/don’t our diagrams tell us?’ and ‘Does your diagram match the reality of your teeth?’

· For my map I used a camera and a mirror. And I drew it in my book. Some people had lost teeth and some people didn’t. There were three people helping us and we took a photo and drew it.
Text reads: ‘Some children do have this many teeth: 25, 21’ (with the children’s names).  ‘No one has this many teeth: 37’ (the amount drawn).

Text reads ‘estimation’ on the left hand page, and on the right, the child is drawing what he actually sees.

Below are some more photos and scanned images of the children investigating their mouths and creating maps or diagrams

I used a mirror to look at my teeth and I counted it again and it was a different number.

There were nine on the top and nine on the bottom. I have 9+9.
